Maryam Wahid

I was introduced to Maryam’s work when I was in my second year of University by one of my tutors. I have since then kept up with her work as she was one of the first artists that I found who was also a female, British Pakistani photographer who was photographing portraits and issues similar to me.

The project that really inspired and prompted my own journey of photographing Muslim women was called ‘Women from the Pakistani Diaspora in England” where Maryam took self portraits where she explored the identity of her mother when she moved to England as an 18 year old girl.

Maryam has done a few projects now that she has become a more recognised photographer which have been backed by The Midlands Arts Centre, British Council and Art Council England, which has given me more of a drive to produce more of my work so that one day I could possibly also carry out this type of work.
